Obituary For Mavis Ann Struyk

Funeral services for Mavis Struyk, 97, of Perry, IA have been set for 12:00 o’clock noon, Saturday, February 17,2024 at First Christian Church in Perry. Burial will follow at Violet Hill Cemetery. Visitation, with family greetings friends, will be from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Mavis passed away Monday, February 12. 2024 at the Lutheran Home Eden Acres.

Mavis Ann Parcel was born in Perry, Iowa on November 2, 1926 and passed away peacefully in Perry on February 12, 2024. She was raised on the farm across from the radio station by her parents George and Carrie Inez (Bryant) Parcel.

She met Rober Kuehl through 4-H and they were married on March 14, 1948 in Perry. They bought a farm outside Jamaica and had two daughters, Maureen and Coral. Mavis sold the farm after Roger passed away in 1957. She purchased a house in Perry and worked for the Perry Community Schools from 1958 until the spring of 1973. She then worked for the Federal Land Bank as office manager and then at each of the three nursing homes in Perry as the dietitian.

Mavis married John Struyk on July 6, 1969 in Perry after his wife Dorothy passed away from cancer. The family was expanded to include his children, John, Lydia “Ruth” and Marilyn.

After she retired, she worked full-time helping John farm.

Mavis and John enjoyed traveling to Europe and Russia.

She was able to live in her home until the last year and half. While in her home she enjoyed gardening, canning tomatoes and making jelly.

Mavis was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church where she served as an elder, board chair, on the Funeral and Farm committees and wherever else she was needed.

Mavis is survived by her daughters: Maureen (Verle) Haglund of Perry, IA, Coral (Randy) Sorenson of Elkhart, IA, Marilyn (Chris) Paddock of Sioux Falls, SD and John (Anant) Struyk III of Nashville, TN; ten grandchildren: Tina Kohlman, James Struyk, Brad (Lisa) Snedeker, Jonathan (Jessica) Snedeker, Thomas (Elizabeth) Erronis, Greg Haglund, Mollie (Curtis) Clark, Jeff Haglund, Brent (Amanda) Sorenson, Jerry (Allison) Sorenson; 14 great grandchildren and two nephews and one Niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Inez Parcel; husbands Roger Kuehl and John Struyk; brothers Lester (Pearl) Parcel, Roland (LaVera) Parcel; step daughter Lydia “Ruth” Struyk, grandson Scott Kohlman and granddaughter Tina Haglund.

The family thanks you for coming today along with your prayers. We also thank Spring Valley, Lutheran Home and Suncrest Hospice for the care they gave her.
