Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at Murdock Funeral Home for Dick McNeill, 82, of Perry. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Richland, IA on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 4, 2018 with the family receiving friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Murdock Funeral Home. Dick passed away October 31, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Richard Lee McNeill was born October 8, 1936 in Crawfordsville, Iowa the son of John R. and Helen A. (Stewart) McNeill. He attended schools and graduated with the class of 1956 from Crawfordsville High School. He always said he graduated in the top ten of his class because there were only ten kids in his class. Dick received awards as a star 4H member.

The McNeill family owned and operated a Standard Oil gas station for nearly one hundred years. Dick started working at the station at an early age. When he was ten years old he was the first polio patient in Washington County to be diagnosed. He spent eight weeks in an iron lung at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Dick enlisted in the United States Army on November 14, 1956 and was Honorably Discharged on August 24, 1959. On October 12, 1958 Dick married Carolyn Ann Hinshaw at the First United Methodist Church in Washington, IA. Two wonderful children, Jim and Marsha, were raised and loved by Dick and Carolyn.

Dick worked for International Harvester Company in Washington, IA, Columbia, MO and Perry, IA before his retirement. He then worked for Perry Community Schools as a bus driver for eleven years and also at the grade school cafeteria. He loved kids! He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan and a member of Crime Stoppers. Dick would never say a bad word about anyone.

The ones that will miss him so much are his wife Carolyn McNeill of Perry, IA; son Jim (Lisa) McNeill of Dallas Center, IA; daughter Marsha McLaughlin (Don Rusch) of West Des Moines, IA; three grandsons Ben (Steph) McNeill of Hutchison, MN, Jake McLaughlin and partner Gary Bissig of Ankeny, IA, Andrew McLaughlin and fiancé Molly Cook of Williamsburg, IA; great- grandson William A. McNeill and soon to be great-granddaughter Kara McNeill.; exchange student son Raymundo Sotello Rosas and wife Wendy of Mexico and one sister JoAnn (Carol) Newquist of California.

Memorials to the family may be sent to Murdock Funeral Home, in Dick’s name. Online condolences may be left at murdockfuneralhome.net

Dick worked with my husband, Perry, at Rosene International from 1993-2000. Dick was probably Perry's best work friend. Dick was always so kind and supportive to Perry and our family and when Perry died suddenly in 2004, Dick's memories and words of comfort meant a lot to me. What a great guy!

I have never met anyone that was so special and worked so hard and was so good with the kids at school. He was a very wonderful person and will be so missed. Carolyn and family, with deepest regards from myself, Mick Long, Alex Long and Kelsey Long.

Carolyn, so sorry to see you have lost the love of your life. Even though time and space was between us, I often thought about all of you and the good times we had together oh so many years ago. Thinking of you and yours at this time with love, Harriett Kestel Pauley.
